Cell Organelles and Functions
Nucleus: The control center of the cell; houses the DNA.
DNA: The molecule that holds your genetic code; has a double helix shape.
Nucleolus: Center of the nucleus; produces ribosomes.
Nuclear Membrane: Protects the nucleus and keeps in the DNA.
Mitochondria: The Mighty Mitochondria! Produces the ENERGY for the cell! The site of respiration!
Lysosome: Digests and breaks down old cell materials, like a garbage disposal or recycling bin.
Vacuole: Stores water and food. The storage bin of the cell!
Ribosome: Site of protein production. Puts together proteins from different amino acids.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): Transports the proteins from the ribosomes.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum: Transports fats and other materials around the cell.
Golgi Body (Golgi complex/apparatus): Sorts and packages proteins to ship out the rest of the cell.
Centriole: Helps in cell division.
Cell Membrane: Helps maintain homeostasis by controlling what enters and leaves the cell.
AND in plant cells...
Chloroplast: Turns sunlight into sugar for the plant; site of photosynthesis.
Cell Wall: Surrounds the cell membrane to protect the cell and give support.
Central Vacuole: larger than in animal cells, still stores water and food for the cell.
